I worked my way through my math homework. If x^2 + 2x + 1 = 0, what are the possible values of x? I don’t know! I tried a few numbers to see what might work. 1 failed, so did 2. Maybe 3? No, I’m just getting further and further from the answer.
Why did Miss Georgia make me do this? My skirt is a muddy mess now, and I don’t even want to think of my hair. Yet here I am, hiding outside of the archery range doing my homework. Archery practice ended an hour ago, yet I was told to wait around after practice until I saw something interesting. After about fifteen minutes of waiting I got bored and decided to work on some homework.
I flipped through my textbook to try and find the answer. Why does this have to be an even problem? By the way, I’m not bad at math just because I’m in a girl’s body now.  My parents have always threatened to send me to a tutor for math if my grades don’t improve. But I can’t help it. I’d rather doodle in my notebook than solve problems.
Aha! There’s the answer! Well, not really an answer, just a method. Factoring. I had heard about this in class, but I didn’t really pay much attention. The teacher speaks in such a monotone, it’s hard to understand her.
Suddenly, I heard a noise. A whizz shot through the air, ending with a hard thud. I got up from my bush and looked around. The light of day had just started to diminish, turning everything to shadows. And there, on the archery pavilion, stood a silhouette.
Another whizz, another thud. Practice ended an hour ago! I guess somebody’s a bit of an overachiever. I went back to my text to continue working on my problems.
Practice had gone a bit smoother today. Alli started to call herself my personal coach, with the goal of making me hit a bulls eye by the end of the month. We worked mainly on alignment of my body today. As I pulled though, my breasts began to hurt. The string kept digging into them and for the first time in my life, I realized what a pain breasts can really be.
“We need to get you a chest guard,” said Alli. “Here, try mine for now.” She fastened the guard onto me. It became pretty obvious that I had a larger chest than she did, but at least it was something.
“Thank you,” I replied. “I’ll be sure to give it back at the end of practice!”
Yet here I was, sitting in the bushes, with the chest guard in my backpack. How could I have been so stupid?
Another whizz followed by another thud. The silhouette on the pavilion bowed its head and went out to collect the arrows.
I went back to my math homework. Oh my god! Without thinking about it, I had doodled a picture of a beautiful archer girl where the answer was supposed to go! What was I thinking! Eraser, eraser…
I sorted through my pencils and pulled out my eraser. And as I did, my fingers slipped and it went into the mud.
“God dang it!” I said angrily.
The silhouette stopped moving. “W-Who’s there?” it asked timidly.
Well, there went my cover. I put my books in my bag and wiped the eraser off on my skirt (it was dirty anyways, who cares), and approached the pavilion.
“I should be asking the same question,” I said as I approached. “Isn’t it against school rules to be on premises at this hour?”
The girl laughed. “Of course it is, but so are you.” I stepped into the light, and there I saw exactly who the girl was.
“Alli?” I asked, shocked.
“Liz?” she responded. “What are you doing here?”
Quickly, I tried to think of something. “Here, I forgot to give you back your chest guard,” I said, and rummaged through my bag to grab it.
Alli frowned. “That means you knew I was going to be here,” she said.
Great. I never think things through, do I?
“Well, no matter,” said Alli. “I don’t care how you found out. The reality is, you found out my little secret.”
I looked down the range. There on the target were probably a hundred arrows. How long was I dazed for?
“How long have you been doing this?” I asked.
Alli counted on her fingers. “Hm, three years now?” she said. “Well, actually, I did it in middle school too, so I guess six?”
“That’s not what I meant…” I said.
Alli laughed. “Oh, you mean how long each time? Well, I usually finish around ten, then do some homework until eleven…”
What? “Do you sleep here?” I asked.
Another laugh. “Of course not! Soon as I’m done with my homework I head back to my house and sleep in my own bed. Wake up at the first light of dawn and head back for a morning practice.”
What the hell. “Your parents don’t mind?” I asked. “They don’t wonder where you’ve been?”
She shook her head. “I only have a dad, and I hate him. He knows it, and knows that I don’t want to be in the house. So as long as he keeps seeing good grades from me, he lets me do as I please. I don’t think I’ve even said a nice word to him since my first day of middle school.”
“What about holidays?” I asked. “You have to see him then, right?”
She put up her hand as if riding a subway. “Oh, there’s a competition for Thanksgiving. I’ll be out for the day.” Then she mimicked a plane. “Time for the Christmas tournament!”
I see. She escaped.
“Do you do anything other than archery?” I asked. “I mean, like, outside of schoolwork, archery seems to be all you ever do.”
She shook her head. “Nah, I have to get better. I’m missing one out of every hundred shots. My mom would never approve.”
“What kind of mom do you have?!” I demanded.
“Well,” she said, “my mom was the gold medalist at the Olympics years ago. She died when I was young though, but I knew her demand for perfection from me. So I have to keep going at it. I’ll make her proud of me, even if I have to stay for hours each day!”
She sat down. “But,” she said, “nobody knows this secret now but you. Liz, I barely know you. I didn’t even know you existed until Miss Georgia recommended you here.” Of course not, I was a guy until yesterday… “So,” continued Alli, “I’ll do any one thing you want to keep this a secret. It could be anything, be it doing your homework to paying you to…”
Any one thing. A kiss! I’d win if I asked for that! But, something just pulled at my heart. It wouldn’t be right. I can’t win like this, via threats and blackmail. And didn’t Miss Georgia say that getting a kiss wouldn’t be easy? Yes, I had to earn it. I had to make her like me. But how do I go about finding out more about a person that I like?
“A date,” I said out loud.
Alli looked at me strangely. “A date?” she asked. “Isn’t that what girls and guys do? You know we’re both girls.”
I frowned. “And what’s wrong with that?” I asked. “A girl can like a girl too you know!”
Alli laughed. “Oh,” she said, “you’re a lesbian. I’m sorry to tell you that I’m only into guys. But you know, it could be fun. Fine, if you want to hang out this weekend, I’ll come with you. Seven in the morning tomorrow sound good to you?”
Wait, seven? Wow, she gets up early. But I won’t pass up this opportunity! “Sounds good,” I said. “See you then!”
Day 3. Getting into the meat and potatoes now. As per usual, ignore the name on the preview pic, this is Alli.
